Learning Conversation 1

What do you think has gone particularly well so far this year? What are your strengths? So far, I have enjoyed the in-class discussions, as well as the practical work we did on the suspense short. I think that this has gone well because I previously didn't engage much with other students or in class activities. I think that my strengths are some of the ideas that I have, but I think I need to work on outputting them. Identify 3 specific targets for yourself for the rest of this year. I would like to get better at in-depth analysis of some products. I would like to achieve a high grade in the course. I couldn't think of another one. Do you have any suggestions about the course?

INTRODUCTION TO CHARITY ADVERTISING

What is the purpose of a charity advert? To raise awareness for a certain issue, and to possibly make people donate, volunteer or support the charity or the issue that the advert is showing. Changing someone's viewpoint on an issue. How do they work? They often work by making the viewers sympathise for the issue, if the personal is feeling emotional towards the advert they are more likely to donate to the cause. What mode of address do they take? Serious, solemn, sometime treated like we're ignorant. Direct mode of address What conventions do they demonstrate? Guilt trip, black and white, slow motion footage, slow and sad music, Actual footage of an effected area. Media language, sound, mise-en-scene, representation, modes of address, ideology, semiotic codes, binary oppositions. NSPCC - OPEN YOUR EYES ADVERT Still background, to-the-point text, black and white, slowly fades into colour, all of the keywords are in a green colour (same colour as a logo and the co

Oasis / POM Advertisements

Image
Oasis Advertisement Oasis presents a realistic and cynical view of advertising, while still using traditional advertising tactics. This poster tells the viewer basic facts (This advertisement was ran in the summer). It tells the user quite frankly that they have to sell a certain amount of bottles of Oasis. With this, they are not being deceptive (seemingly) because they are poking fun at the advertising industry by being so blunt with their marketing. I think that this is effective because there is supposedly no deeper meaning or symbolic code behind this advert - on the surface. Many people who feel that they are too smart to be fooled by advertisements may fool for this one based on the fact that it appears to nudge the viewer and say 'Hey, we aren't like other brands with their deceptive marketing' where in actual fact, if a consumer buys a product because of this advert then they are still buying the product, which is what Oasis wants. This poster is also laid
