The potential impact on audiences of any absent representations (what stereotypes / dominant ideologies is this representation fuelling?)

Does Zoella subconsciously associate beauty deals with specific ethnic groups for her audience?

How do those representations or 'absences' reinforce 'otherness' according to Stuart Hall?

Within the selections of the videos that I have watched, I feel that there is quite a large bubble that Zoella is part of. There is a selection of vloggers listed above that are all white, and for the most part, straight. All of these vloggers collaborate with each other and this creates symbolic annihilation. This reinforces the idea that beauty is white and straight, as this is all that is represented. This can also cultivate audiences because of how they are only exposed to this bubble.

It could be argued that the Zoella channel unwittingly reinforces cultural binaries through its almost total exclusion of non-white participants. The channel's marginalisation of non-white ethnicities suggests a segregated view of UK society, constructing a sense of 'otherness' through the absence of those ethnic groups. Additionally, the channel's construction of an aspirational, ideal lifestyle coupled with its reinforcement of beauty ideals might lead an audience to perceive that these are statuses that cannot be achieved by a non-white audience.
