Postmodernism

Hyper-reality: Essentially beyond reality. "It is no longer a question of imitation, nor duplication, nor even parody. it is a question of substituting the signs o the real for the real"  ~ Jean Baudrillard Barthes // Semiotics Sign -Anything that can have meaning Signifier -The thing that creates meaning Signified -The meaning that is created Jean Baudrillard // Postmodernism and Hyperreality In postmodern culture the boundaries between the real worlds and the world of the media have collapsed and that it is no longer possible to distinguish between what is reality and what is simulation. In fact, it really doesn't matter which is which Therefore, in this postmodern age of simulacra, audiences are constantly bombarded with images which no longer refer to anything real. Because of this, we are now in a situation that media images have come to seem more real than the reality they supposedly represent. This concept is referred to as hyperreali...

Structuralist Theory Mock

According the Claude Levi-Strauss, texts convey their meanings through a system of binary oppositions. Evaluate this structuralist theory. Refer to the set episodes of Humans and The Returned in your response. [30] There are many representations within 'Humans'. Firstly, they present Anita from a body bag, showing that she is essentially in captivity, being held without freedom or free will, which is already a demonstration of a binary opposition. When Anita is first presented as the bag is unzipped, it is presented as a spectacle, she is first and foremost judged by her superficial qualities, such as attractiveness. This is further backed up by how the camera pans down to her posterior as Joe drops back, walking behind her. This blatant show of sexuality and objectification shows how women are generally represented within this series. As Anita is a Synth, some of the male characters may assume that it is okay to sexualise her, after all, she doesn't have emotions, and co...

Humans Textual Analysis

Voyeurism: The composition of the first shot at the farm is through a car window, showing a snippet of the man's face, the same can be said for the long shot of the greenhouse. It creates a tense atmosphere which reflects the subject matter of the scene. Music: Overall, the music in this scene and throughout the show is heavily representative of the Sci-Fi genre, with many electric instruments and otherworldly sounds that suggest dystopian future, akin to the one that this show takes place in. We know this because of the genre conventions of Sci-Fi. The music picks up as Peter calls one of the Synths, this continues through the greenhouse scene but quickly drops to portray the dialogue. The dialogue is tense and dramatic, and portrayed like a crime show, almost like an interrogation, portraying genre fluidity between Sci-Fi and Crime Thrillers. The music picks up again when Fred, the Synth, starts to run, and is shut down. The music mellows out again when the focus is back on Pet...

Headline - "American Gothic" Standfirst / Kicker - Under title. Pull Quote - Under title. Body / Body Copy - Mid to bottom left side. Main Image - Bon Iver outside a church. Captions - Bottom right corner. This double page spread creates meaning through its distinct use of intertextuality, the article, titled 'American Gothic', features a double meaning. Firstly, the typeface chosen, as well as the stencilled graffiti style and the colours, suggest a more urban version of the gothic style, and this is complemented by the man in the picture, as he has quite a modern style of clothing, as well as the tattoos. The audience is anchored by the title bleeding from the black into the rest of the page. this leads the audience'e eyes into the page, and creates a sense of completeness between the two pages. Furthermore, the title 'American Gothic' alludes to the classic Gothic painting of the same name, featuring a couple outside of a chapel much like th...
Name of video, artist, and subgenre Sweatpants - Childish Gambino - Hip-Hop Dayvan Cowboy - Boards of Canada - Electronica(?) Minerals & Gems - Jonwayne - Rap Editing techniques, including pace and transitions Sweatpants - The music video is unique because it all takes place within a diner, every character in the video is Donald Glover (Gambino), the pace is quite fast as he walks about the diner, and it looks like one continuous shot, at the end of the video, he returns to the diner and everyone looks like him and the video resets, like a loop. Dayvan Cowboy - the video is really slow paced, it starts out in space, with slow moving parts and an astronaut jumping out of a shuttle, the video begins to pick up speed as the astronaut is falling, and when it looks like he is about to hit earth, it cuts to a video of the ocean, which is where the pacing of the music changes, fitting the giant waves in the ocean, much like the waves someone would surf over. the transition is ...
